Previous US Open Venues

It was played out over four rounds on a nine-hole course in Newport, Rhode Island, and took a day to complete. Since then the tournament has grown in stature and been played at a number of premier United States golfing locations.

The US Open venues which have most frequently staged the tournament are:

  • Oakmont Country Club, Oakmont, Pennsylvania, has hosted the US Open eight times: in 1927, 1935, 1953, 1962, 1973, 1983, 1994, and 2007;
  • Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield Township, Union County, New Jersey, has hosted the US Open seven times: 1903, 1915, 1936, 1954, 1967, 1980 and 1993.

The most recent ten previous venues to have hosted the US Open championship are:

  • 2007: Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania (won by Ángel Cabrera)
  • 2006: Winged Foot Golf Club, West Course, Mamaroneck, New York (won by Geoff Ogilvy)
  • 2005: Pinehurst Resort, Course No. 2, Pinehurst, North Carolina (won by Michael Campbell)
  • 2004: Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, Southampton, New York (won by Retief Goosen)
  • 2003: Olympia Fields Country Club, North Course, Olympia Fields, Illinois (won by Jim Furyk)
  • 2002: Bethpage State Park, Black Course, Farmingdale, New York (won by Tiger Woods)
  • 2001: Southern Hills Country Club, Tulsa, Oklahoma (won by Retief Goosen)
  • 2000: Pebble Beach Golf Links, Pebble Beach, California (won by Tiger Woods)
  • 1999: Pinehurst Resort, Course No. 2, Pinehurst, North Carolina (won by Payne Stewart)
  • 1998: Olympic Club, Lake Course, San Francisco, California (won by Lee Janzen)
  • 1997: Congressional Country Club, Blue Course, Bethesda, Maryland (won by Ernie Els)
