Barnes holds on to tie with Glover
Former US Amateur champion Ricky Barnes stands on the verge of making history at Bethpage Park.
The 28 year old will go into the final day of play with a score of 7 under, and 17 holes to play. Barnes is currently tied with Lucas Glover at the top of the leaderboard, with a host of top ranked golfers, including Phil Mickelson, tied for second five shots back.
Barnes has never won a tournament on the PGA Tour, and has never led a PGA Tour event going into the final day of play. His lack of experience showed in the final two holes of the day, as he bogeyed both to allow Glover back into the contest.
“I got some nerves,” Barnes said at the end of play on Sunday. “But that’s golf. If you don’t have a little bit of nerves when you’re in the heat of competition, especially in the last group, you’re not human.”
The 2009 US Open has been pushed into an extra day of competition by persistent rain at Bethpage Park Golf Course. While all the players in the field got in a full round of golf on Sunday, it wasn’t enough to prevent players from having to return to the rain-soaked course on Monday.
