2010 US Open Venue
Pebble Beach Golf Links (Pebble Beach, California)
Pebble Beach Golf Links hardly needs any introduction. As one of the most famous golfing establishments in the western United States, Pebble Beach Golf Links is known as one the most scenic courses in the world, with its grand sea views and close proximity to the rugged coastline firmly entrenching it as a favourite within the golfing fraternity, and making it an excellent 2010 US Open venue.
Pebble Beach Golf Links was designed by Jack Neville and Douglas Grant and opened in 1919. In 2001 it was rated as the best golf course in America by Golf Digest magazine. This achievement was especially significant as Pebble Beach Golf Links then became the first public (open to the public; not a private club) golf course to achieve this honour.
There are four other courses in the Pebble Beach community apart from Pebble Beach Golf Links. These are The Links at Spanish Bay, Spyglass Hill Golf Course and Del Monte Golf Course. All these courses present players with breathtaking scenery and excellently manicured greens and fairways, but the pinnacle of the courses in the Pebble Beach area is the Pebble Beach Golf Links, which has deservedly been chosen as the 2010 US Open venue.
The US Open has been contested at Pebble Beach Golf Links a number of times in the past
- 1972 US Open: Pebble Beach Golf Links' first year of hosting the US Open. Jack Nicklaus was the winner of this championship, wining with one of golf's all-time most memorable shots. He played a 1-iron onto the green in windy conditions on the 17th hole that hit the flagpole and ended up a few centimetres from the hole, giving Nicklaus an easy birdie for the championship victory;
- 1982 US Open: Tom Watson won this year's US Open golf tournament at the Pebble Beach Golf Links with two shots to spare;
- 1992 US Open: This year's tournament was known as one of the most challenging ever tournaments played at Pebble Beach Golf Links, with only two players finishing under par - with Tom Kite taking top honours at three under;
- 2000 US Open: The millennium tournament was, like 1992, also a very challenging one, with only one player finishing under par - that was winner Tiger Woods with -12, a huge 15 shots ahead of the pack in that year's US Open championship.
Pebble Beach Golf Links will again be the 2010 US Open venue. For more information about the 2008 US Open venue, visit our Torrey Pines section.
