2006 US Open History

This was the fifth US Open golf tournament to have been played at Winged Foot Golf Club. In 1974 the US Open was played here and was known as “The Massacre at Winged Foot” in reference to Hale Irwin's surprising win with a score of seven over par.

Winged Foot Golf Club also held the US Open in 1929 and 1959, as well as in 1984. It was then 12 years until the venue hosted the US Open again - in 2006. The 2006 US Open was the 106th US Open, and was played from June 15 to June 18, 2006.

Ogilvy ousted top-class players like Jim Furyk, Colin Montgomerie and Phil Mickelson to become the 2006 US Open winner. The total prize purse for this event was $6.25 million, of which Ogilvy took home $1.225 million.

Geoff Ogilvy played two tidy pars in a row and was then on the receiving end of a sizeable amount of luck when Phil Mickelson and Colin Montgomerie failed to get par on the final hole, effectively handing Ogilvy the win.
