2005 US Open History

The 2005 US Open golf championship venue was Course 2 at Pinehurst. This venue also hosted the US Open in 1995 and 1999 and will again host the US Open golf tournament in 2014.

Proving his superior resilience over the four-day tournament, Michael Campbell from New Zealand outclassed all his competitors to win the 2005 US Open with a one-under 69, which gave him victory over the great Tiger Woods by two strokes. With the win, Campbell became the first New Zealander to win the US Open golf championship.

2005 US Open first round

The lead at the end of the first round of the 2005 US Open at Pinehurst No.2 belonged to Olin Browne and Rocco Mediate who both posted 67. Ernie Els managed a one-over 71 while Tiger Woods finished on par. Retief Goosen managed 68, Phil Mickelson posted 69 and Vijay Singh also finished the day with par.

At the end of the second round of the 2005 US Open the lead belonged to Retief, Oline Browne and Jason Gore, who all finished the day with 138. Gore had pulled out all the stops late in the day to shoot five birdies for his 67. There were a total of nine players who finished under par at the end of day one, but this was a completely different story at the end of day two when only five players finished over par.

2005 US Open third round

The third day of the 2005 US Open belonged to Retief Goosen, who raced into a three-shot lead by the end of the day. He had come back nicely from a double-bogey on the 13th hole to sink three birdies on the last five holes. Battling it out for second at the end of the day were Olin Browne and Jason Gore, who both posted 72.

It was Michael Campbell of New Zealand who claimed the winner's trophy at the 2005 US Open at Pinehurst No. 2. Tiger Woods was hot on his heels but Campbell managed to keep him two shots away. Campbell sunk four birdies and three bogeys on the day to end on 69 for the final round. This was enough to give him the win at the 2005 US Open.
