2004 US Open winner

Retief Goosen won the 2004 US Open golf tournament. It was the second US Open win for the South African - his first was in 2001 at the Southern Hills Country Club. Goosen won the tournament by two shots after he birdied the 16th and after Phil Mickelson double-bogeyed the 17th. Prize money for the 2004 US Open was $6.25 million, of which Goosen claimed $1.125 million.

2004 US Open first round

Jay Haas claimed top spot on the leader board after the first round of the 2004 US Open with four under par. Vijay Singh posted a convincing 68, as did Phil Mickelson. The South African duo of Ernie Els and Retief Goosen each posted par on the day, while Tiger Woods had to settle for two-over.

2004 US Open second round

Phil Mickelson dominated on day two of the 2004 US Open, shooting a very tidy 66. At the end of the day he was tied for the lead with Shigeki Maruyama. Ernie Els managed four birdies in a row to come in with 67. Tiger Woods improved to one-under at the end of the day.

Day three of the 2004 US Open belonged to Retief Goosen as he claimed a two-shot lead in what was the stiffest day of the tournament. There were only three players to return to the clubhouse with below-par scores - Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els joined Goosen in laying claim to this feat. Tiger Woods lapsed back to a three-over and Vijay Singh finished dismally with 77.

It was Retief Goosen all the way on the final day of the 2004 US Open, as he streaked to a two shot win over Phil Mickelson to win his second US Open golf tournament with a final score of 276. The average score for the final round of the 2004 US Open was 78.7, but Goosen showed class in managing to post a 71 on the day.
